How Can a Christian Vote for a Democrat?
We don't like labels because we can't be contained nor agree with everything they do or say but if we have to choose this is why we choose democrat. I can't speak for everyone so I will give my perspective.
I believe God wants us to have freedom to choose Him. God wants us to love Him freely, for our love to be a choice. He chose us and He wants us to choose Him back. He doesn't want to make us love Him nor does He want to force us to choose Him. We see this in the Garden of Eden.
The Bible shows us this with Adam and Eve. God told them specifically to not eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil, He gave them a choice to break that command by placing the tree in the Garden of Eden. He could have not put the tree there and not given them a choice, but He did, because He wanted them to choose Him, to choose what He said to do, choose to love Him. God said if you love me, you will obey me (see John 14:15-30). So just because there is a law in place that we don't think fits our beliefs we have a choice to do what that law allows or not. The choice is there, you choose what you think God is telling you to do, but do we have the right to take the tree of knowledge of good and evil away per se if God chose to have it there, should there be a choice if God gave a choice to us? Should we force someone to live the way we think they should live if God does not force that upon us?
We live in a country that has freedom of religion as a natural right. Everyone does not believe in Jesus, nor does everyone have a relationship with God. As Christians we are set apart, sacred, and filled with the Holy Spirit that enables us to have faith and do what is right. We try to do what is right because Jesus saved us, He loves us, and Christ lives in us. We cannot expect people who do not have faith and the Holy Spirit, to be like us and to live like us and to make the decisions we make.
As a believer in Christ, we should be more concerned with people accepting Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior rather than trying to tell them how to live and they don't have Christ nor The Holy Spirit living in them yet. We are nothing without God. Nothing. So even if we do get Republicans in office and pass all the laws that are wanted by them and get all the citizens to abide by that law and they don't believe in Jesus and have a heart for Christ it means nothing, because they will not be saved without believing Jesus is the Son of God.
As Christians we may think that if we can get the law changed according to what is righteousness and if we can sit in those seats of power like president, congress, or judges we can make a difference, but the truth is we don't need those positions to make a difference. We can make a difference by being just who God intended us to be, right where we are, where God assigned us to be to make that difference. Although sometimes it may seem like a low position to the world, the truth is it is high because you are working for the most high. Because He lives in you, your example, your influence, will change the world around you, will turn people's hearts towards Jesus, and the love of God will live in their heart giving them the grace or power to do what is right, live what is right in God's eyes and the law of this land will not matter because we will do what is right.
Whenever I see this question, how can a Christian vote for a Democrat? I come to the assumption that people are mainly talking about abortion, how can a Christian that is a democrat condone abortion? The answer is we don't. Oh, I forgot, I was speaking for myself, with exceptions I don't condone abortion, because I realize that there are medical gray areas, other people don't believe in what I believe, and other people don't believe in Who I believe in.
I attended a Catholic school. I'm not Catholic but when I was there, I embraced it and took in the culture and got to know some people. I see where they are coming from when it comes to abortion, and I feel looking further than just saving the unborn child's life I think having an abortion puts a burden on the mother because she may have regrets later that she had one; however, I don't think this issue should be handled legally or by making the law line up with our beliefs, I think it should be approach based on one's faith. I think instead of fighting to get laws changed to control people's lives and bodies we should be fighting to get hearts changed towards love for Jesus. Of course, we as humans can't change anyone's heart but God can, and we can plant the seed to let people know they are loved and there is another alternative.
On the contrary, trying to get people to do things based on the law or being religious creates a burden on man that we cannot live up to on our own. In the book, Give Them Lala by Lala Kent she expresses how Mormons live a rule-filled life in which many of them are prescribed medication to deal with the anxiety and depressions that comes from guilt from not being able to live up to those rules and judgments. So people leave the religion because they can't handle the pressure and condemnation.
This is why Jesus came to free us from the law and being religious and to rely on the Holy Spirit.
I heard Creflo Dollar say that the Holy Spirit does not convict us of sin, but He convicts us of not believing in God. He convicts us of unbelieve. All acts of sin come from the one act of not believing in and resting in the relationship you have with Jesus Christ.
For instance, God will not convict you not to steal but he will convict you of not believing that God is your source and this conviction and knowing that God is your source, and He will love and take care of you will give you the faith and you know you don't have to steal because God is your source.
Like when republicans say they believe in God but, their actions say otherwise. If republicans believed in God as their source, they wouldn't have stolen the Supreme Court Justice seat from Merrick Garland when he was nominated by President Barack Obama in 2016. The seat was vacant because Justice Antonin Scalia had died. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell decided to consider the nomination void because he and the republican party decided the justice should be chosen by the next elected president even though there was sufficient time to vote Garland in. Republicans say they have Christian values but will manipulate to get what they want or take unrighteous means to get to what they believe is a righteous end which eventually led to getting Roe vs. Wade overturned.
In conclusion, I'm not saying this to convince you to change your stance on abortion or to become a democrat, but I am saying this, as a Christian, God does want us to be righteous, but He wants us to have mercy for others as well, and that is how a Christian can be or vote for a democrat, because we are extending love, understanding, and grace to others who don't believe what we believe and to let them know there is a God who loves them that died for their sins and once they truly believe that in their heart then they will be enabled and willing and wanting to live holy.
